Welcome to the Schirawski Lab of Microbial Genetics!
We seek to understand how biotrophic fungal pathogens of plants manage to control their plant hosts, suppress plant defenses, manage to multiply and spread through the plant tissues, manage to perceive tissues suitable for spore formation and change morphology and physiology of their hosts.
To reach these goals, we use
- The model organisms Sporisorium reilianum and Ustilago maydis, two related pathogens of maize that cause different symptoms and have a different host range
- Fluorescence microscopy
- Genome comparison
- Transcriptome analysis
- Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
- A highly motivated team!
